The Great Big Thank You Awards are here to  shine the spotlight on people who go the extra mile and step up when they are needed – the people who make a positive difference to where you live and work.

We asked you to tell us about them and you did. And since July 19 you have been collecting special vote tokens printed in the Shropshire Star. The final tokens were printed on Saturday, August 11 and the deadline to send in the vote tokens was Saturday, August 18.

Following a special event which took place on September 27 at Hadley Park House Hotel, Telford, please see below the winners of this years Great Big Thank You Awards.


Ambassador of the Year - Kim Fawke

Kim is the driving force behind the Telford Park Run, which brings hundreds together each week

Carer Award - Cheri Williams

Looks after two grandchildren and suffers health problems but still has time to run community groups and raise money for charity

Community Champion - John & Christine Greenhalgh

Stalwarts of Age UK. They are both former trustees and have run a day centre

Environmental Champion - Cuan Wildlife Rescue Centre

For the tireless work carried out by volunteers in rescuing sick animals

Fundraiser of the Year - Edd & Ruth Lowe

Pub landlords who have raised thousands for the military charity Help for Heroes

Grandparent of the Year - Eileen Walton

A cancer patient who has raised hundreds of pounds for Macmillan to help others

Outstanding Bravery Award - Sarah Copeland

sarah donated a kidney to her mother-in-law Stephanie Copeland, transforming her life

Volunteer of the Year - West Mercia Search & Rescue

For its work searching the River Severn in the event of missing people who may have fallen in.

Young Star Award - McKenzie Smith

McKenzie has overcome cerebral palsy to play wheelchair football, tennis and basketball

Online voting: The online voting period is from 9am Thursday, July 19 until 12 noon on Tuesday, July 24, 2018. Individuals may vote online up to a maximum of 25 times. It is possible to vote for more than one finalist but only one finalist per category. 

All votes will be subject to scrutiny and multiple online votes, from the same person or IP address, exceeding 25, will be declared void.

Printed vote tokens:
Closing date for receipt of votes is Saturday, August 18, 2018. Tokens must be accompanied with a fully complete Voting Tokens Return Form. Photocopies or defaced tokens will not be counted. 

Tokens must be cut around the dotted lines. If posting, the correct postage must be put on the envelope. Entries with incorrect/insufficient postage will not be accepted nor will they be collected from Royal Mail and the entry will therefore be void. 

No responsibility will be accepted for any submissions which are lost, damaged, or delayed in the post. If there is a voting tie in any category, a judging panel will choose the outright winner. The Editor’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
